Ryan slammed his foot onto the accelerator of his dented electric scooter, dodging a group of six-legged toddlers near the Eureka Crag Retail Ridge.
Ten yards ahead, the Hyper-Sovereign Discount Voucher flapped its paper wings and chirped a mocking digital melody. If Ryan didn’t catch that sentient piece of paper before it reached the singularity-drain at the end of the promenade, Mr. Meankinder’s angry head would personally fire him into the sun.
“I am losing my grip on reality and these stairs,” Dover groaned, his metal treads clanking as he detached from the floor to gallop alongside Ryan. “Life is just a series of descents, Ryan. Why chase a ninety-nine percent discount when death is one hundred percent free?”
“Not now, Dover,” Ryan yelled, swerving to avoid a kiosk selling DNA-scented candles. He reached out, his fingers grazing the voucher’s perforated edge, but the paper performed a mid-air barrel roll, dodging his security net with sentient grace.
Suddenly, a glob of neon-purple slushie hit the voucher square in its barcode. Nebula Norris leaned out of the El Pluto Loco drive-thru window, her third arm waving a sticky scoop. “Slowed it down for you, Space Cadet! That will be five credits for the assist!”
The voucher sputtered, its wings weighed down by frozen sugar. It crash-landed onto the railing of a maintenance lift. Ryan dove off his moving scooter, arms outstretched, and tackled the sticky paper just as it reached the edge of the Crag’s thousand-foot drop into the void.
“Gotcha,” Ryan panted, holding the vibrating paper aloft.
Mr. Meankinder’s angry head materialized, purple with rage. “You idiot! That was the Buy One, Get One Apocalypse coupon! You weren’t supposed to catch it; you were supposed to let it expire!”
As the voucher beeped an ominous countdown, Ryan realized the fine print was actually a fuse.
