Bubble, Bubble, Ryan’s in Trouble

The Coso Junction Geothermal Sector was melting. Liquid sulfur dripped from the ceiling of the Bed Bath & Way Beyond, but Mr. Meankinder’s Kind head would not budge from the decorative fountain. He was hunched over the geyser with a tiny silk net, humming a rhythmic lullaby to the steam.

“Sir, the tectonic plates of this moon are literally folding like a taco,” Ryan shouted, his security scooter tires melting into the floor. “We need to reach the escape pods before the food court becomes a magma pit.”

“Just one more, Ryan!” the Kind head chirped, eyes wide with manic glee. “Look at the surface tension on that vapor sphere! It is the Platonic ideal of a bubble!”

Meanwhile, the Mean head was screaming at the Kind head to run, and the Er head was just blowing raspberries into the steam.

Dover the Escalator rumbled nearby, his metal steps clanking in a depressing minor key. “Why bother? We are all just grease on the gears of fate,” he sighed. “If the lava doesn’t get us, the insurance claim will be a nightmare.”

Nebula Norris skated past, her third arm using a fire extinguisher as a jet-propulsion tool. “Hey Ryan, the guy at the kiosk says the escape pods are full of churros, so I am just going to ride the magma flow out of here!”

Mr. Meankinder lunged, falling face-first into the boiling minerals. He emerged gasping, holding a shimmering, perfectly round bubble that glowed with a rhythmic purple light.

“I have it!” he shrieked. “The perfect geometry!”

The bubble popped. The resulting shockwave inverted the mall’s gravity. Ryan hit the ceiling just as the Mean head took over, screaming, “YOU ARE ALL FIRED FOR POPPING MY PERFECTION!”

Everything must go — GULP!

The neon banners screaming “CLOSING FOREVER” were visible from the stratosphere of the Ontarion-7 Sprawl. Ryan squinted at the flashing red alerts of The Void-Mart, a store that had occupied the same three-acre asteroid for four centuries.

“I’m telling you, it’s a trap,” Nebula said, her third arm stealing a snack from a nearby kiosk. “They’ve been liquidating since my great-grandmother was a larva.”

Mr. Meankinder’s angry head screamed into Ryan’s ear, demanding he control the stampede of six-legged bargain hunters. “The inventory is expiring! Move those toasters or you’re fired!”

Dover the Escalator let out a low, mechanical groan as a mob of shoppers trampled his treads. “Going out of business? If only we were so lucky. This is just a metabolic phase.”

Ryan realized the truth when the walls began to ripple and secrete slime. The store wasn’t closing; it was a giant, sentient Mimic molting its facade to attract fresh credit-chip data.

“Hey, Mr. Meankinder,” Ryan shouted over the roar of shoppers being digested. “Is the 50% discount valid if the store eats the customer before the transaction clears?”

When Ryan Met Dover

Ryan stared at his orientation map, which was currently being eaten by a bioluminescent space-goat. He was stranded in the Ontari-O-Zone Cargo Nexus, a humid sub-sector reserved for bulk shipments of sentient sludge.

“Great,” Ryan muttered. “I’m going to die next to a crate of self-aware mayonnaise.”

He stepped onto a motionless escalator to get a better view. Suddenly, the metal treads groaned with the weight of a thousand mid-life crises.

“Don’t bother,” a voice vibrated from beneath Ryan’s sneakers. “Life is just a series of loops that lead nowhere, much like my internal belt drive.”

“The stairs are talking?” Ryan jumped.

“I’m Dover,” the escalator sighed, his handrails drooping like sad noodles. “I was a high-speed transport until I realized the futility of vertical movement. Now I just contemplate the heat death of the universe.”

“I’m Ryan. I’m lost and my map is inside that goat.”

Dover’s treads clicked. “A human? Finally, someone who understands pointless labor. Hop on. I’ll take you to the food court just to smell the despair of the deep-fryers.”

“Is that a yes?”

“It’s a ‘why not,’” Dover replied. “Mind the gap. It’s where I keep my poems.”
